A plain-language guide · Understand an online visit
Make room for a real exchange.

If a form you fill in before a visit sends you straight from a list of products to payment, ask how the clinician will assess your problem. Find out where your own questions fit.
Ask how the clinician follows up
Medical-board guidance says a fixed form with no chance for follow-up questions is not enough for a proper assessment.
Instead, the guidance calls for a way for the clinician to ask more questions after reading your answers.
Guidance adopted in May 2026 also requires a way for patients’ later questions to reach their clinician.
Ask how that exchange works before paying. Is there a live conversation, a message exchange, or another way to clarify an answer? Ask what happens when the first information you send is not enough.
A format is not the whole assessment
As of September 26, 2026, state rules for online prescribing differed, including rules about forms and phone-only visits.
A form may be part of care, but it must gather enough information for a proper assessment and meet your state’s rules.
Before paying, ask: will a clinician review my answers and ask me more if needed? How will you decide if I need an examination in person? Which state rules apply to this visit?
Medical-board guidance says to refer patients for care in person if a needed physical examination or test cannot be done remotely.
Ask about the outcome before the visit
Ask whether the clinician can discuss other options, recommend an in-person assessment, or decide that a requested product is not appropriate. Ask what the fee covers in each case.
Keep the answer with the service’s terms. The question is how care will work for the concern you bring, rather than how quickly you can reach a checkout page.

- Medical-board guidance on remote assessment
This national medical-board group offers advice, rather than making laws. Ask your state medical board which rules your online visit must follow.
- Medical-board guidance on product menus and questions
A treatment-menu choice falls short of a full assessment; the guidance says you must also have a chance to put your own questions forward.
